The hidden cost of the American dream: what H1B visa holders really spend

An Indian startup founder warns that impressive US salaries can be deceptive once the true cost of living for families is accounted for.

High American salaries that appear transformative when converted into Indian rupees can be deeply misleading, an Indian startup founder has cautioned, urging H1B visa holders to examine their finances more carefully before relocating.

Entrepreneur Aniruddha Anjana highlighted that family expenses substantially erode take-home pay in the United States, a reality he says few people discuss openly. Applying the widely used 50/30/20 budgeting rule — which allocates half of income to needs, 30 per cent to wants and 20 per cent to savings — he compared what households actually spend across several American cities.

His analysis suggests that the gap between a gross salary and genuine disposable income is far wider than many prospective migrants anticipate, making careful city-by-city financial planning essential before making the move.
