Food regulator moves against Amazon, Flipkart, Zepto over mislabelling and banned items

India's food safety regulator has launched enforcement action against five of the country's largest e-commerce and quick-commerce platforms — Amazon, Flipkart, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart and BigBasket — over violations of food safety norms.

The action covers a range of offences including misbranding, misleading product claims, and the sale or display of items classified as prohibited or poisonous under food safety regulations. The regulator's move signals a toughening stance toward online platforms that list and sell food products directly to consumers.

The cases highlight growing regulatory concern that digital marketplaces may be bypassing the labelling and product-safety standards that apply to conventional retailers.
