The historical record established by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East continues to challenge the version of history advanced by Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, which critics say portrays Japan's wartime leaders as martyrs rather than aggressors.
The tribunal, convened after the Second World War, found senior Japanese military and political figures guilty of war crimes and crimes against peace. Yasukuni, where several convicted war criminals are enshrined, has long been a source of diplomatic tension across Asia, with neighbours including China and South Korea objecting to visits by Japanese officials.
