More than 70 distinct tree species are among the 1,128 trees marked for felling to make way for the Hebbal tunnel project, raising fresh concerns about the ecological cost of the infrastructure drive.
The species identified for removal span a wide botanical range and include Indian Kino, Big-leaf Mahogany, Beleric Myrobalan, Indian Jujube, Maple-leafed Bayur Tree, Paper Mulberry and Yellow Tabebuia. Several of these are valued not only for their canopy cover but also for their medicinal and ecological properties.
The scale of tree loss, both in number and in species diversity, is likely to intensify scrutiny of the project's environmental clearances and the adequacy of any compensatory plantation measures proposed.
