Fed rate hike piles pressure on RBI ahead of October policy review

A quarter-percentage-point rise in US borrowing costs is complicating the Reserve Bank of India's calculations as it prepares its next rate decision.

The United States Federal Reserve's latest quarter-percentage-point interest rate increase has added a fresh layer of complexity to the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy deliberations, with the central bank's October review now approaching under heightened external pressure.

When the Fed raises rates, capital tends to flow toward dollar-denominated assets, putting downward pressure on emerging-market currencies including the rupee. A weaker rupee can push up the cost of imports and stoke domestic inflation, narrowing the RBI's room to hold or cut its own benchmark rate.

The development means that millions of Indian borrowers with floating-rate home and personal loans could feel the indirect consequences of decisions made in Washington, as the RBI weighs its response to global monetary conditions.
