Delhi Police detain protesters at Jantar Mantar as row over Election Commission deepens
TMC MP Mahua Moitra joined demonstrators calling for the arrest and resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Delhi Police detained several protesters at Jantar Mantar on Friday as a demonstration demanding the arrest and resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar gathered momentum in the capital. The agitation centres on a dispute over dissent within the Election Commission and broader concerns about Kumar's conduct in office.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra was among those who joined the protest, lending it additional political weight. Her presence underscored the opposition's determination to press the issue into the public arena despite the police action against demonstrators.
The controversy has also drawn in Kerala's political establishment. Former Finance Minister T. M. Thomas Isaac alleged that Gyanesh Kumar had a questionable record during an earlier posting in the state. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan separately called for Kumar's removal from the post of Chief Election Commissioner, intensifying pressure on the official from multiple fronts.
