An 87-year-old woman has been evicted from her Madrid home after she was unable to afford the rent imposed by a firm that had recently acquired the property, in a case that has shone a harsh light on Spain's worsening housing crisis.

The elderly tenant, known as Maricarmen, had been living in the flat until the new owners set rental terms she could not meet, leading to her removal from a home she had long occupied.
