An 87-year-old woman has been evicted from her home in Madrid after she was unable to meet the rent demanded by the firm that recently acquired her building, in a case that has thrown a sharp light on Spain's worsening housing shortage.

The elderly tenant, known as Maricarmen, had been living in the flat until the new corporate landlord set rental terms beyond her means, leaving her without a home.
