Neurobiologist Ye Bing insists return to China is personal, not driven by campus death

Neurobiologist Ye Bing has moved to reject suggestions that his departure from the United States is linked to the death of Chinese scholar Wang Danhao, who died by suicide at the University of Michigan, where Ye was also based.

Ye said his decision to join Nanjing University was made independently and was not shaped by Wang's death or by the political climate in the United States under the Trump administration.

The researcher's return to China is nonetheless drawing attention amid broader scrutiny of the conditions facing Chinese academics working at American institutions.
