Neurobiologist Ye Bing insists China return is personal choice, not shaped by campus death

Neurobiologist Ye Bing has dismissed suggestions that his departure from the United States was triggered by the death of Chinese scholar Wang Danhao, who took his own life on the University of Michigan campus where Ye also worked.

Ye, who is joining Nanjing University, said his decision to leave Michigan was made independently and was not connected to Wang's suicide or to the political climate under the Trump administration.

The case has drawn attention amid broader discussions about the pressures faced by Chinese academics working in the United States, though Ye has been firm that neither campus events nor policy concerns were factors in his own move back to China.
