Rights body demands halt to illegal coal mining in Assam's Tinsukia district

A human rights body has demanded urgent action against alleged illegal coal mining in the Ledo area of Assam's Tinsukia district, calling for all related documents to be examined and illicit transportation routes shut down within 72 hours.

The Tinsukia District Committee of the International Human Rights Council issued the demand, pressing authorities to move swiftly against what it described as unlawful mining activity in the region.

Ledo, situated in one of Assam's coal-rich belts, has long been associated with mining operations, and concerns over unregulated extraction have periodically drawn scrutiny from civil society groups and regulatory bodies. The IHRC's intervention signals growing pressure on local administration to enforce compliance with mining laws and clamp down on supply chains linked to illegal extraction.
