Venezuela's Delcy Rodríguez meets Trump in New York while Maduro remains in custody

Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodríguez has met Donald Trump in New York, describing the encounter as a "historic meeting" and posing alongside the US president for photographs at a five-star hotel.

The meeting marks a striking diplomatic shift, coming fewer than nine months after Trump ordered the abduction of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, who remains detained close to where the talks took place.

Rodríguez did not say whether she intended to visit Maduro during her time in New York. The two leaders had previously been considered firm adversaries, making the friendly imagery from the meeting all the more remarkable.
