Trump grants Ukraine licence to produce Patriot air defence missiles, Zelenskyy says
Ukrainian president says the assurance came during his most recent meeting with Trump, ending a period of uncertainty on the issue.
US President Donald Trump has made a final decision to grant Ukraine a licence to produce Patriot interceptor missiles domestically, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Friday.
Zelenskyy said Trump conveyed the decision in person during their latest meeting, describing it as a definitive commitment after a prolonged period of uncertainty marked by several reversals on the question.
The move is expected to significantly strengthen Ukraine's air-defence capabilities at a time when the country faces a critical shortage of interceptor missiles. Being able to manufacture Patriots domestically would reduce Kyiv's dependence on external supplies and allow it to replenish stocks more reliably during the ongoing conflict.
The Patriot system is widely regarded as one of the most effective surface-to-air missile platforms in the world, and the ability to produce interceptors locally would mark a substantial shift in Ukraine's long-term defensive posture.
