Rubio tells UN General Assembly the international system has broken down

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio used the platform of the United Nations General Assembly to deliver a blunt verdict on the state of global governance, arguing that the international system has outlived its usefulness when it comes to resolving major geopolitical disputes.

Rubio told delegates that he detected a broad consensus among world leaders that the current framework is no longer adequate, a shared frustration he said was driving nations to prioritise their own national interests over collective multilateral obligations.

Despite his sharp criticism, Rubio stopped short of dismissing the institution entirely, acknowledging that the system retains some value even as he made clear that Washington would place its own interests above the demands of the existing world order.
