Ukraine drone strike sets tanker ablaze off Sochi as 23 Indian crew members are rescued
A Ukrainian drone attack ignited a large fire aboard a tanker near the Russian Black Sea resort city, but all crew were brought to safety.
A tanker caught fire off the coast of Sochi after a Ukrainian drone strike, prompting a major rescue operation that brought all 23 crew members — each of them Indian nationals — to safety. The blaze burned with such ferocity that firefighters were unable to approach the vessel to tackle the flames directly.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on shipping connected to the wider conflict in the region. In a separate development, Oman evacuated injured crew members from a tanker that came under attack in the Strait of Hormuz. India's Foreign Ministry confirmed that 11 of the 12 crew members wounded aboard that vessel, named the On Peace, were Indian nationals.
The two incidents underline the mounting danger faced by Indian maritime workers caught in conflict zones stretching from the Black Sea to the Persian Gulf. New Delhi has been closely monitoring the safety of its nationals working aboard commercial vessels in both areas.
