Donald Trump has denounced Norway's Nobel Peace Prize committee after it chose former International Criminal Court judge Navi Pillay as its latest laureate, telling supporters at a rally that the decision was "disgraceful" and amounted to an indelible stain on the country.

The president said he had "never heard of" Pillay, who served as a judge at the ICC before later holding senior human rights roles on the world stage. Trump's remarks drew sharp attention given that he has made little secret of his own ambition to win the prestigious prize since returning to the White House in January 2025.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually by a Norwegian committee and has long been a source of international prestige, though its selections have periodically drawn controversy from political figures. Trump's outburst represents one of the most high-profile attacks by a sitting American president on the Norwegian body's judgment in recent memory.
