Jaishankar presses Rubio over US sanctions law threatening tariffs on Russian energy buyers
India's foreign minister raised concerns about legislation that could see 100% tariffs placed on countries still purchasing Russian oil and gas.
India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confronted his American counterpart Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly over a newly enacted US sanctions law that poses significant economic risks to New Delhi.
The discussions centred on the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, signed into law by President Donald Trump last week. The legislation empowers Washington to impose tariffs of up to 100% on any country that continues buying Russian oil and gas — a provision that directly targets major purchasers such as India and China.
India has remained one of Russia's largest energy customers since Western nations moved to restrict such trade, making the new law a pressing diplomatic concern for New Delhi.
