Pranavi strikes Asian Games gold as India women take team silver in golf
The 23-year-old from Mysore becomes the first Indian woman golfer to win gold at the Asian Games after a dramatic final-round recovery.
Pranavi has made history by becoming the first Indian woman golfer to win a gold medal at the Asian Games, delivering a composed final-round performance in Nagoya despite a potentially ruinous start to her round. The 23-year-old from Mysore, who had entered the day holding a three-stroke overnight lead, suffered a triple bogey on the third hole that briefly threatened to derail her challenge.
She responded with three birdies to steady her round and hold on for the title, cementing her place in Indian sporting history. The Indian women's team also claimed a silver medal in the team event, adding further lustre to a memorable day for the country's golf contingent.
India's success extended beyond the fairways. Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod won a historic recurve archery gold, a result that also earned India an Olympic quota place. The Asian Games have otherwise carried a shadow for the Indian camp after kurash player Yash Kumar Chauhan, 24, failed a dope test. His sample was found to contain at least three banned substances, including metabolites of the steroid Metandienone.
Shooter Neeru Dhanda, who won three medals at the Games including women's individual trap gold, was named as India's flag bearer for the closing ceremony.
