Arunachal cabinet greenlights committee to survey Siang mega dam site

The Arunachal Pradesh state cabinet has approved the formation of a panel to carry out a survey for the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, a hydropower scheme that would produce an estimated 11,000 megawatts of electricity.

The committee's immediate task will be to prepare a pre-feasibility report for the ambitious project on the Siang river. The approval marks a significant step forward for a scheme that has long been on the drawing board.

However, the move is likely to intensify tensions with communities in the area. Many villagers have been vocally opposing efforts to advance the pre-feasibility study, raising concerns about the project's potential impact on their land and livelihoods.
