President Donald Trump has approved a firing-squad execution for Nidal Hasan, the former United States Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others in a mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the execution, which Trump approved on Monday, according to a statement from Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell. The Army has yet to set a date or location for carrying out the sentence.

Hasan, who held the rank of Major, was sentenced to death following a court-martial that found him guilty of the attack at the Texas military base. If carried out, his execution will mark the first time the United States military has put a prisoner to death since 1961, underscoring the historic and rarely exercised nature of capital punishment within the armed forces.
