FSSAI drops two-phase plan, backs single rollout of front-of-pack food labels

India's food safety regulator has told the Supreme Court it is prepared to introduce Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling for packaged food products in a single phase, abandoning a previous proposal to roll out the rules in two stages.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had earlier planned to stagger the introduction of labelling norms based on the number of nutrients of concern contained in a product. The regulator's revised position signals a more decisive approach to informing consumers about the nutritional content of packaged foods.

The development came during a Supreme Court hearing on Wednesday, where FSSAI indicated its willingness to move ahead with the unified implementation.
