Manchester City have been found guilty on 114 of the 115 financial charges brought against them by the Premier League, in a verdict that represents one of the most significant rulings in English football history. The charges, which span an alleged period of nearly a decade, were first formally laid before an independent commission in February 2023.
The club had contested the proceedings throughout, maintaining that it had conducted itself properly at every stage. In a statement, City said it had respected due process for eight years on the understanding that the Premier League board and executive would act as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.
The verdict sets the stage for a separate hearing to determine what sanctions, if any, will be imposed. Potential punishments available to the commission are wide-ranging and could, in the most serious scenario, include points deductions or expulsion from the league, though no penalty has yet been announced.
