Ten dead and over 100 homes destroyed as Uttar Pradesh receives 19 times normal rainfall

Ten people have been killed and more than 100 houses destroyed in Uttar Pradesh after the state recorded approximately nineteen times its normal rainfall within a single day, as the monsoon season intensified its grip across large parts of India.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and powerful winds tore through communities across the state, damaging 117 houses and flattening standing crops, deepening fears among farmers already contending with an unpredictable season. The scale of the destruction underscores the severity of a weather event that caught many areas with little warning.

The devastation in Uttar Pradesh forms part of a wider pattern of monsoon-related disasters unfolding across the country. In the eastern state of Odisha, more than 70,000 people have been evacuated as rivers swelled and flash floods swept through southern districts. Further north, pilgrimage routes in Uttarakhand were suspended after heavy rain disrupted the Char Dham Yatra, stranding devotees and prompting safety concerns along mountain highways.

Authorities in the affected states have deployed emergency response teams and are assessing the full extent of the damage. With the monsoon season still at an active stage, officials have urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant as further heavy rainfall is expected across several regions in the coming days.
