BCI not equipped to regulate legal education standards, Supreme Court rules

The Supreme Court has declared that the Bar Council of India is not an expert body capable of regulating the academic and educational standards of law colleges across the country, delivering a significant ruling on the limits of the council's authority.

A bench of the court observed that while the BCI retains the power to lay down broad general guidelines concerning the functioning of law colleges, it cannot exercise sweeping control over their educational standards. "The BCI may lay down general guidelines with regard to functioning of law colleges but you cannot control it," the bench stated.

The ruling is expected to have wide implications for the governance of legal education in India, potentially curtailing the council's reach into the academic affairs of institutions offering law degrees.
