The United States military will publicly livestream the execution of Fort Hood gunman Nidal Hasan on December 3, the Pentagon has announced, marking the first such public execution in 65 years. The Defence Secretary confirmed the execution will be carried out by firing squad at Fort Hood.

Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 others during a 2009 shooting rampage at the Texas military base. The Army announced the execution date earlier this week.

While the Pentagon has confirmed the event will be made public, at least one legal expert has described the decision to livestream the execution as unprecedented and warned that it rests on uncertain legal ground. The move is expected to draw significant scrutiny given both its historical rarity and the legal questions it raises around the public broadcasting of a state execution.
